Latchstring Award

Since 1980, the Town Council has annually recognized citizens of the Town of Yarmouth who have contributed their time, efforts and concern for an extended and exemplary period for the benefit of the citizens of Yarmouth.

The Latchstring Award with its name derived from the town motto “Our Latchstring Always Out”, is intended as an acknowledgment of those citizens whose examples of citizenship and leadership keep Yarmouth a warm and welcoming community of caring individuals.

The Latchstring award will be presented at the Annual Town Meeting in June and shall include presentation of the “Town Chair”.  The Awardee’s name(s) shall be added to an engraved plaque on display at the Town Hall and shall be engraved on the granite monument at Latchstring Park.  The Awardee(s) shall also be featured in the next subsequent published Annual Report of the Town of Yarmouth. 

Nomination Process:

Nominations for the Latchstring Award may be made at any time from July 1 through the following March 31.  Nominations may be submitted in writing or using the online form below.  Nominations must include:

  • Contact information for person offering nomination  
  • Nominee Name and Address
  •  A short explanation of how the individual(s) exemplify the spirit of volunteerism in our Town and community, including committees, organizations and years of service. 
  • Nominations are due to the Town Clerk before April 1, annually.
  • Email any additional information to Lisa Grant, Town Clerk

Only current residents of Yarmouth are eligible for the award, except that the Town Council may consider posthumous award to a person(s) otherwise qualified to receive the award at the time of death.
